Climate Solutions

The Washington Post is committed to taking significant, ambitious action to reduce emissions and help combat one of the world's most pressing challenges: climate change.

Understanding our carbon footprint was a crucial first step in developing a meaningful sustainability strategy. In 2022, we completed a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, a standard developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The results of this inventory are being used to set, and more importantly achieve, emissions reduction targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

We are using an “RSIO” framework to guide our initial action, defined as reduce, switch, innovate and offset. This organizing principle will help us take immediate steps toward reducing emissions and help us identify future actions. Our first initiative will be publishing an annual report to convey more information about the scope of our carbon emissions.

Our commitment to creating a more sustainable future is not limited to our own operations. We intend to work with our suppliers to ensure that our values of environmental stewardship are embedded across our various supply chains.

We also remain dedicated to reporting on sustainability and climate change and have invested heavily in expanding the numbers of reporters focused on covering the most pressing urgent environmental issues facing our world and the real-world impact. Our goal is to ensure readers have the most up-to-date, comprehensive climate information available and help them understand how they can help protect our planet.
